It’s been a busy fortnight in all things body language as part of the ongoing evolution (check out my last newsletter for more info on ‘evolution or revolution’…). I’m thinking that people are interested in body language tips! And no, I haven’t made my millions on there just yet; watch this space!
This is the second most watched video, with 3.1M views… (The link is the YouTube version as the newsletter doesn’t support Tik Tok links as yet).
Body Language for Brand Marketing
I’m particularly interested in the messages that the people in your content can convey to consumers when they view your brand content, whether it’s images or video.
Get it right and this happens for consumers:
- Brand attention
- Brand engagement
- Sales
- Brand loyalty
- Brand perception scores go up
- Recommendations
- Long-term memory and emotional associations
These images are taken from the M&S website (sorry M&S, I do love you, but you need my help!).
Both images are typical of the types of product images used in the fashion industry, and with a few changes to the models’ body language, they could be extremely engaging! But they aren’t currently. Think back to the list I just gave you of what happens when a brand gets its content right for the consumer.
Here’s what I see in both images from a body language perspective.
Male:
- A questioning facial expression. To make this work for consumers, adding some text to the image that answers the question would attract attention.
- The posture says ‘I’m fed up of waiting’ – the feet direction, one hand in the pocket, holding the hat along with the questioning facial expression. Can you feel that description I just gave you of what he might be thinking?
Female:
- Neutral facial expression.
- Neutral body language.
There’s nothing for consumers to hook onto from the body language and the clothes become ‘neutral’ too… It’s time to stand out from the crowd by using body language to engage your consumers.
Body Language for Business
Did the finger wipe out your promotion, your negotiation, or your sales pitch? It’s not the finger you’re thinking about right now, but the one in my video at the start of this newsletter. By not understanding body language, you could be missing all sorts of signs and clues as to how other people are really feeling.
If you have a big pitch, a negotiation, a job interview, or even public speaking coming up, send me a DM; I can help you increase your chances of success in a variety of ways. Remember, it’s not just reading other people; they’re reading you too, and do you know what messages you’re sending out…
If you’re interested in getting a free bit of analysis on your brand’s marketing content, send me a few images you’re using and I’ll privately give you feedback on the emotional impact you’re making.

I have a free 30-minute presentation that will help you and your team learn more about body language and how it can benefit your brand or business, “The Business of People.” Just let me know a time and location, and I’ll gladly deliver it to you.
