The Face Whisperer revealed…

Many people say to me, what’s a face whisperer, what does it mean and what do you do?

My background is based on shopping behaviour research, for 15 years I worked with a global research company as general manager, working with global and national brands to understand shopping behaviour for categories, brands and retailers.

I have guest lectured on Consumer Psychology for the last 8 years at 3 of the UK’s leading universities.

I also run workshops at universities such as St Andrews University and for businesses (big and small) on Negotiation, The Business of People, Decoding the Face to Unlock the Audience.

11 years ago, I went to the University of California and studied the Facial Action Coding System – FACS.

FACS is a comprehensive, anatomically based system for describing all visually discernible facial movement. It breaks down facial expressions into individual components of muscle movement, called Action Units (AUs).

For the last 5 years, I’ve been working with a variety of clients as a consultant and bringing together my expertise on consumer psychology, shoppers and their behaviour, emotions and facial expressions.

What sort of projects would need this expertise; I hear you ask? If I say so myself, I have done some random stuff! Here goes, a list that is not comprehensive but will give you a taste of a day in the life of The Face Whisperer:

The National Trust – Commissioned me to deliver training to their membership teams on Consumer Psychology and based on the training to write their handbook to ensure consistency throughout the organisation.

Samaritans – I was part of the team that created an award-winning campaign (not just in the charity sector). Helping them create and select the most appropriate key visuals for the campaign – Real People.

LRS (Lucozade Ribena Suntory) – Measuring emotional effectiveness and impact on customers in bars with regards to a new product line – (ask me about this, it’s a good story!).

Unilever – Key visual analysis for ad campaigns resulting in reporting what works and what doesn’t and how the audience will likely engage or not…

PR agencies – Writing articles, attending press launches as the guest expert, interviewed for campaigns as a face and body language specialist.

Media – From the ITV This Morning sofa to The Scottish Times, The Sun, The Daily Mirror and many more to commentate on items of news.

Training – For the last 6 months I’ve been working with a Trader who trains others to become traders and I do a psychology session each month to help them understand their current reality, limiting beliefs and emotions to create a natural success mindset.

There are many more projects that I haven’t outlined but hopefully, you can get a flavour of how The Face Whisperer spends time for clients.
